These collages are inspired by Henrietta Swan Leavitt. Not allowed to look through a telescope in the early 20th Century because she was a woman she studied star cepheids from glass photographic plates and discovered one of the fundamental methods of calculating distance in the universe. Hubble used her work to advance his theory that “the universe is much bigger than just the Milky Way and that our own galaxy is but one of many”.  She was given little to no credit and the results of her work was published under male astronomers’ names.
